Simplifying UK Expat Teaching Requirements: KHDA and ADEK Registration

Once you land in Dubai or Abu Dhabi as an expat teacher, the international leg of your document legalisation journey is complete, but the final, domestic steps are just beginning.

To formally secure your residency visa and your teacher licensing (via the Knowledge and Human Development Authority - KHDA in Dubai, or the Department of Education and Knowledge - ADEK in Abu Dhabi), your foreign paperwork must go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) within the UAE.

The final steps to cross the finish line include the following procedures:

1. Verify Prior Home-Country Stamping

Before MoFA will accept any foreign document (such as your UK, Irish, US, or South African degree, teaching license, or police check), it must already bear the stamp of the UAE Embassy in the country where it was issued. If you arrive in the UAE with just an Apostille or local government stamp, the document will be rejected, and you will have to send it back to your home country via a specialised courier service to get the embassy stamp first.

2. Handle MoJ Legal Translations (If Applicable)

If any of your essential moving documents (like a marriage or birth certificate for family sponsorship) are not written in English or Arabic, they must be legally translated.

• This translation must be completed by a translator certified directly by the UAE Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

• Once translated, the Arabic/English version is bound to the original and submitted to MoFA to ensure it holds full legal weight within the country.

4. Local Ministry Attestation (The Final Step for Teachers)

Once MoFA has stamped the back of your degree, you are cleared at the international level. However, because you are entering the education sector, your school's HR department will take your MoFA-attested credentials to complete the absolute final step:

• Ministry of Education (MoE) Equivalency: For certain teaching licenses and advanced roles, your foreign qualifications must be formally equated to the UAE’s educational standards. Your school's PRO (Public Relations Officer) typically handles or guides you through this portal submission once your MoFA stamp is verified, paving the way for your official employment visa and teaching permit.

Pro-Tip: Make sure your documents are entirely free of plastic lamination. UAE MoFA officials must be able to stick the physical security label directly onto the paper; laminated documents cannot be attested and will require you to order a replacement original from your home country.
