ADEK Teacher Licensing Abu Dhabi

While Dubai relies on the KHDA, Abu Dhabi’s private, charter, and public schools are governed by the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK).

The regulatory system here is incredibly rigorous. It manages teacher onboarding and licensing through a centralised staff licensing portal known as ADEK PASS (Professional Approval & Licensing for School Staff). You cannot legally step in front of a class or engage in any school duties until your school has successfully secured an ADEK appointment letter or work permit through this platform.

The end-to-end process operates through a structured system.

The Process: Step-by-Step

Much like in Dubai, the individual candidate does not apply to ADEK directly. Your school's Human Resources team acts as the primary link, uploading your fully legalised credentials into the PASS portal.

1.Submission to ADEK PASS:Pre-Arrival & Initial Week.

Once you provide your HR team with your home-country and UAE MoFA-attested qualifications, they upload your complete digital profile to the ADEK PASS portal to request an initial school appointment letter.

2.Strict Vetting & Background Checks:3-5 Working Days.

ADEK conducts comprehensive vetting. This includes validating your international police clearances (such as an ACRO or ICPC check from the UK) and checking your name against student-protection and regional regulatory databases.

3.Conditional Approval & Visa Issuance:Issued via PASS.

Upon clearing the initial vetting, ADEK issues a provisional work permission letter. This document allows the school to formally process your residency visa and physical Emirates ID card through the Abu Dhabi government.

4.The Professional Licensing Exam:Within the First Academic Year.

Unlike Dubai’s induction-based route, Abu Dhabi requires educators to obtain a formal UAE Teacher's License. You will be scheduled to sit exams covering Pedagogical Knowledge and Specialised Subject Matter to secure full, long-term licensing status.

Critical Eligibility Rules for Abu Dhabi

ADEK enforces exact structural policies regarding who can be appointed to core teaching roles. If your paperwork does not meet these baselines, the PASS portal will automatically reject the application:

  • The Two-Year Experience Rule: ADEK strictly mandates that all incoming international teachers must have a minimum of two years of documented classroom experience. You will need to provide an official, stamped reference or experience letter from your previous schools detailing your employment dates and specific roles.

  • The "Exact Match" Degree Requirement: Your Bachelor’s degree must explicitly align with the subject you are hired to teach. For instance, if you are hired as a Secondary Chemistry teacher, you must hold a degree in Chemistry or an explicitly related science field—a general degree with a post-graduate teaching certificate (like a PGCE) may face heavy scrutiny if the undergraduate major doesn't match the subject curriculum.

  • English Language Proficiency: If you are a native English speaker from the UK, Ireland, the US, or South Africa, language assessments are typically waived. However, if you are teaching specific core subjects or moving from a non-native system, you must meet exact IELTS or TOEFL benchmarks before PASS approval is granted.

⚠️ Student Protection & Strict RejectionsADEK reserves the absolute right to return or outright reject any PASS registration without disclosing a formal justification to the school. Crucially, any candidate who has ever been under investigation or subject to an unresolved inquiry regarding student safety or child protection matters will be blocked from receiving clearance until full, explicit exoneration documentation is uploaded and verified by the highest regulatory authorities.
